Tim Cook says Apple will ‘break new ground’ in GenAI this year

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is planning to upgrade Siri and iOS’ built-in search tool, Spotlight, with GenAI models, with the goal of enabling both to answer more complex queries and handle sophisticated multi-turn conversations. Apple is also said to be exploring AI-powered features to allow users to automatically generate presentation slides in Keynote and playlists in Apple Music, as well as GenAI-powered coding suggestions in Xcode, the company’s app development platform.

Google DeepMind, has released Genie, an image-to-video AI model that can generate fully interactive, playable games from real world images or even human-made sketches.

The model is trained on 200,000 hours of unsupervised public internet gaming videos and can generate video games from a single prompt or image.

OpenAI Admits Challenge: Avoiding Copyrighted Data in AI Training Deemed ‘Impossible’

OpenAI asserted to a UK parliamentary committee that developing leading AI systems, like ChatGPT, without extensive copyrighted data is “impossible.” The company argues adhering to copyright law in AI training is impractical due to broad requirements.

According to OpenAI’s written testimony, the combination of expansive copyright laws and protected online content would restrict access to “virtually every sort of human expression” for training data. OpenAI argues that limiting training data to public domain content from over a century ago would not meet today’s needs.

OpenAI acknowledged the possibility of partnerships and compensation schemes with publishers but did not signal intent to limit harvesting of online data, leading to lawsuits, including from media outlets like The New York Times, alleging copyright breaches.

Despite legal challenges, OpenAI is reluctant to overhaul data collection and training processes, citing the “impossible” constraints that self-imposed copyright limits would impose. Instead, the company aims to rely on broad interpretations of fair use allowances to legally use vast amounts of copyrighted data.

As advanced AI mimics human expression, legal experts anticipate courtroom battles over infringement claims against systems designed to absorb substantial volumes of protected text, media, and creative output. Currently, OpenAI favors extensive copying over copyright maximalism to drive ongoing AI development.

OpenAI’s custom GPT Store is now open for business

OpenAI has finally launched the GPT Store, allowing users to share custom chatbots and expanding ChatGPT’s use cases. The platform, initially delayed from November to January, lets users publicly share their custom chatbots, limited to subscribers of OpenAI’s paid tiers.

Since the November announcement of the GPT Builder program, over 3 million bots (GPTs) have been created, with OpenAI planning to highlight useful GPTs weekly. A revenue sharing program for GPT creators based on user engagement will begin in Q1, with specific details pending.

Before the store’s opening, OpenAI implemented a new review system to ensure custom GPTs align with guidelines. The GPT Store is available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, as well as subscribers to the new Team tier for smaller teams.

ChatGPT Team, priced at $25 per user monthly (annually billed) or $30 per user monthly (monthly billing), provides access to GPT-4, DALL-E 3, OpenAI’s Advanced Data Analysis feature, and data control. OpenAI assures that data and conversations from ChatGPT Team will not be used to train any models.

Meta ramps up AI efforts by building chip arsenal, consolidating teams

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to merge AI research with the generative AI team, aiming to integrate the technology into products.

Meta is expanding its infrastructure, targeting 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by year-end, totaling about 600,000 GPUs with other suppliers. This makes Meta’s system one of the largest in the tech industry.

While confirming Nvidia, other GPU suppliers remain undisclosed, with plans to use AMD chips and reports of an internally designed GPU-like chip. Meta intensifies efforts to build computing capabilities, focusing on generative AI after years of research without significant integration into core products and AR/VR hardware.

Deepfakes: A Concern in AI

Ever seen a video or pic that looks too real to be true? It might be a deepfake. Lately, there are fake videos of Bollywood actress Rashmika, Katrina, Kajol and even the Prime Minister going viral.

What can you do?

  • Doubt what you see: Not everything online is legit. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Protect your info: Don’t share too much online. Less info means less for making deepfakes.
  • Report it: If you find a deep fake, report it to the platform. They usually take them down.

Extra tips:

  • Check for weird stuff: Look closely for odd expressions or movements in videos and pics.
  • Watch for impersonation: Be suspicious if a video from someone you know seems off.
  • Be careful with links: Avoid clicking on links in emails or messages. They can lead to fake websites.

AI Robot Becomes CEO of Colombian Beverage Company

A Colombian company just made history by appointing an AI robot, Mika, as its CEO. Mika’s got a cool job – finding customers, picking artists, and creating marketing plans.

Google Takes Legal Action Against Scammers Exploiting AI Craze

Google is tired of scammers from India and Vietnam targeting U.S. small businesses with fake ads on Facebook. The ads promise a free download of Google’s AI chatbot, Bard, but if you click, they steal your social media passwords.

Google is taking these scammers to court to stop the scam and make them pay. They’ve asked Facebook to remove 300 scam ads. It’s not the first time; Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company, dealt with similar scams.

Long story short, the online world can be a bit of a wild west. So, keep your eyes peeled, especially when you see ads for AI stuff

Tech Turmoil: Altman’s Surprise Return and Musk’s Grok Redefining the Chatbot Game

The CEO at ChatGPT, Sam Altman, quit his job just to make a U-turn and came back on Monday. Quite a twist, huh?

While all that was happening, other chatbots like Google Bard and Claude were probably watching the show.

And guess what? Elon Musk just spilled the beans that his new chatbot, Grok, is joining X Premium+ next week. They’re saying it’s getting set up on X’s web app. Looks like things are getting pretty interesting in the chatbot world!

Meta lets you chat with AI versions of celebrities on social media… sorta.

The words “Like something out of a Black Mirror episode” are becoming an increasingly trite — but accurate — way to describe the impact of AI in 2023.

Meta introduces celeb AI conversational characters and is now rolling out its series of artificial intelligence chatbots on Instagram that bears a strikingly similar resemblance to some of the top celebrities, such as Brady, Kendall Jenner, and Paris Hilton

The company has debuted a line of 28 new AI assistants modeled after celebrities, with some acting as new characters within their same careers or others adopting an entirely new persona. Each AI will specialize in answering questions in specific categories, according to Meta’s press release on Oct. 5.

During the virtual event Meta Connect on Sep 27–28, the platform previously known as Facebook launched 28 AI characters that you can socialize with, I guess. But here’s the twist: some of the characters (which come with their own names) are played by an AI trained on the personalities of famous celebrities and public figures. Meta insists that:

“the familiar faces are representing the characters, not themselves”

For those stateside, this isn’t a preview of coming attractions; it’s playing out now. Meta’s celebrity bots have been released in Beta, with a broader global rollout shortly. I’ve included links below so you can interact with their social profiles by sending them a message on Instagram or Messenger.

Meta really is being “meta” right now.

AI impersonating familiar human faces, playing fictional roles, and sliding into your DMs on Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp is about as meta-textual as you can get, and that’s three degrees of simulation (four if you count that the humans are the public faces of the celebrities and not really authentically themselves).

Rethink Your Workforce Plan in the Era of Generative AI

If you have not significantly revised your workforce plan since chatGPT took over social media like a storm, you will be unpleasantly surprised soon.

Harvard Business School and Boston Consulting Group find generative AI significantly increases the productivity and quality of work by knowledge workers.

“For each one of a set of 18 realistic consulting tasks within the frontier of AI capabilities, consultants using AI were significantly more productive (they completed 12.2% more tasks on average, and completed task 25.1% more quickly), and produced significantly higher quality results (more than 40% higher quality compared to a control group). Consultants across the skills distribution benefited significantly from having AI augmentation, with those below the average performance threshold increasing by 43% and those above increasing by 17% compared to their own scores.”

The latest study finds that management consultants work 25.1% faster and 40% better by using ChatGPT and other LLM, and underperformers receive an even bigger boost.
